About
Hi! Nice to meet you. I grew up in Texas, Utah, and Georgia, but mostly Texas, and I never say no to tacos or a hike. I’m a writer and journalist, specializing in environmental audio journalism.
I earned my BA from The University of Texas at Austin in geography and anthropology, and then spent a couple of years working in various seasonal jobs that took me around the country, including guiding teens on backpacking and winter camping trips, waitressing, and waking up before Starbucks opened to survey ancient fishermen on misty Smoky Mountain lakes. Eventually, I secured a spot in the University of Wyoming’s creative writing MFA program, studying fiction and nonfiction and participating in their unique dual degree program in environmental studies. There, in 2014, I began interning in the newsroom at Wyoming Public Radio. That’s where I started making podcasts—and the rest is history.
My audio work has been recognized with honors from the Webby and Ambie Awards, multiple Best Station Podcast Awards from PMJA (Public Media Journalists Association), several Edward R. Murrow Awards, and a NAJA (Native American Journalists Association) Award. I served as editor most recently of Parched, which was featured on NPR’s Up First and All Things Considered, as well as designated an Editor’s Choice by Apple Podcasts; Systemic, a finalist for New York Radio Festival Awards’ Social Justic Podcast; and Terra Firma, designated as an Apple Podcasts “New and Noteworthy,” Summer Listens,” and “We’re Loving.” My work has aired on more than 100 NPR member stations, been mentioned in WIRED and The Atlantic, recommended by The New York Times, been called “vivid, engaging,” by The New Yorker, and featured on numerous best-of lists. My obsession with story and proven success in morphing raw tape into something that beats like a heart can be heard in all my work.
Now, I work for Colorado Public Radio, part of the NPR Network. I’m deeply committed to making stories that help people see the world in a new way—that leave their heads rung refreshingly like bells. I live in Denver, Colorado, with my partner, dogs, chickens, an unwieldy amount of skis and camping gear, and many books.
